Choosing the right roofing for your Florida tiki hut.
Tiki hut roofing comes in two main options: natural sabal palm thatch and synthetic thatch. Both look great; the choice comes down to maintenance, lifespan, and budget.
Authentic sabal palm is the classic Florida tiki look. It's sustainable, provides excellent shade, and sheds rain well when properly installed. Lifespan: typically 3โ5 years in Florida's climate before re-thatching is recommended. It requires annual pest control treatment (licensed applicator) and optional fire retardant for peace of mind. We use natural thatch on all standard builds and offer re-thatching services when it's time to replace.
Synthetic thatch replicates the look of natural palm and, with quality installation, can last up to about 20 years with virtually no maintenance. It won't thin, fade badly, or attract pests. It's UV-rated and suitable for Florida wind zones. It does cost more upfront than natural sabal palm โ you pay more at install in exchange for skipping the 3โ5 year re-thatch cycle. Ideal for commercial properties, high-traffic areas, and homeowners who want the look without recurring re-roofing. We install premium synthetic thatch on new builds and as upgrades โ see our synthetic thatch service.
Choose natural thatch if you want the classic material and lower upfront roofing cost (with re-thatching every few years). Choose synthetic if you want minimal maintenance and a roof that can last up to ~20 years, and you're comfortable with the higher initial investment. We're happy to walk you through the numbers for your project.
